Acclaimed Toronto based saxophonist/composer Kirk MacDonald is touring western Canada with the legendary American pianist Harold Mabern joined by bassist Kieran Overs and Vancouver drummer Jesse Cahill.
With an established reputation as one of Canada’s leading saxophonists, Kirk MacDonald cut his first record at the age of thirteen. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, and has worked with many leading musicians in a variety of musical genres. He has performed on over fifty CDs as both leader and sideman.
For over thirty years Kirk MacDonald has worked and recorded with many leading Canadian, American and international jazz musicians including Sonny Greenwich, Kenny Wheeler, Eddie Henderson, Tom Harrell, Peter Bernstein, Kurt Elling, David Virelles, Ralph Bowen, Seamus Blake, Pat LaBarbera, Jack DeJohnette, Mike Stern, Bob Mintzer, Chris Potter, Maria Schneider, Dave Grusin, James Moody and Rosemary Clooney.
Harold Mabern, one of jazz’s most enduring and dazzlingly skilled pianists, was born in Memphis, a city that produced saxophonists George Coleman and Charles Lloyd, pianist Phineas Newborn Jr. and trumpeter Booker Little. He was an unsung hero of the 1960s hardbop scene, performing and recording with many of its finest artists, and only in recent years has he begun to garner appreciation for his long-running legacy in jazz and the understated power of his talent; as critic Gary Giddins has written, “With the wind at his back, he can sound like an ocean roar.”
During his over half-century on the scene as sideman and leader, he has played and recorded with such greats as Lee Morgan, Wes Montgomery, Sonny Rollins, Hank Mobley, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis, just to name a few. “I was never concerned with being a leader, I just always wanted to be the best sideman I could be. Be in the background so you can shine through.” The quartet will be presenting music from both MacDonald and Mabern along with music from MacDonald’s two CDs featuring Mabern. “Vista Obscura” received the 2015 Juno Award for best Solo Recording in the jazz category. His latest release “Generations” also features Mabern along with Kirk’s daughter clarinetist Virginia MacDonald, bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Andre White.
A powerful and unique band that has wowed sold out audiences throughout Canada and at Jazz at Lincoln Centre’s “Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola”. Not to be missed!
