Pianist Jon Mayer is from the tradition of New York players who are not afraid to express strong emotions from both ends of the spectrum. He is a muscular, blues-based pianist on one hand and is entirely at home with a ballad and its potential for tenderness.

His jazz pedigree is solid, having grown up in New York City during a particularly fertile time in modern jazz evolution. Mayer is represented on a John Coltrane recording “Like Sonny” on Roulette and on a Jackie McLean Prestige date called “Strange Blues”.

Mayer has released several recordings under his own name date from 1996 to the present including nine trio releases, the most recent of which is ”Live at the Atheneaum” plus the new solo live CD “The Art of the Ballad”.

Roy McCurdy will probably always be best-known for his important contributions to Cannonball Adderley’s Quintet between 1965 and 1975 but he has been a tasteful and stimulating participant in many other sessions through the years. Early on, he worked with the Mangione Brothers in the Jazz Brothers, and later the Jazztet, Bobby Timmons, Betty Carter and Sonny Rollins, all before joining Adderley.

Perhaps the most famous of his two dozen recordings with Cannonball and Nat Adderley was “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at “The Club”, which won the Grammy Award in 1967 for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance – Group or Soloist with Group. Joe Zawinul’s title track actually reached number 11 of the Billboard Hot 100, a rare feat for a jazz tune. One of the other classic songs on the album is Cannonball’s “Sack o’ Woe”.

Roy has also worked or recorded with many jazz legends including Count Basie, Wes Montgomery, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Joe Williams, Herbie Hancock, Oscar Peterson, and Bud Powell as well as the jazz rock group Blood, Sweat and Tears.

McCurdy has resided in the Los Angeles area for many years where he has played and recorded with the top local musicians and also taught at the Thornton School of Music at USC and at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music.

Joining Jon and Roy for this weekend will be Edmonton bassist Paul Johnston.
