From Montreal

Tevet Sela – saxophone
John Roney – piano

Alto saxophonist Tevet Sela brings a wealth and breadth of influences to his playing that few musicians possess. The adept and dexterous post bopper’s music is often drenched in heavy blues and the Middle-Eastern inflections of his Israeli cultural heritage.

Sela has joined forces with Montreal-based pianist John Roney to share a musical vision. Their collaboration has produced “The River”, the duo’s debut release. Each artist has a strong identity as a leader and musical visionary, and the combination of their efforts is even greater than the sum of its parts. Through ten original compositions, the duo explores the blending of musical cultures from the Middle East, Europe, and North America to create a sound that is truly unique.

Klezmer ornamentations, North African rhythms, European classical textures, jazz improvisation and groove all flow together effortlessly as this exciting duo navigates new uncharted musical waters. Their fearless improvisations and open-minded musicality make every note honest and spontaneous, engaging the listener at every bend and turn.

As “The River” flows, it connects together our distant lands and welcomes us all to revel in its strength and beauty.

(2) GORDON GRDINA’S THE MARROW
From Vancouver and New York

Gordon Grdina – oud
Hank Roberts – cello
Mark Helias – bass
Mark Feldman – violin
Hamin Homari – Persian percussion

Juno Award winner Gordon Grdina began studying the oud over fifteen years ago. These days he is playing as much oud as guitar. The Marrow extends Grdina’s previous fusions involving avant jazz improvisation and Middle Eastern music as well as drawing to some extent from his more guitar-based projects.

The Marrow began as a trio with bassist Mark Helias and cellist Hank Roberts that was put together to perform at an oud summit in New York. It soon morphed into a quartet with the addition of Vancouver-based Persian percussionist Hamin Honari. For this concert, renowned violinist Mark Feldman joins the group.

Much of the music to be presented during this performance comes from the group’s 2018 Songlines release “Ejdeha”. The music, all original compositions by Grdina, is mostly based on classical Arabic and Persian modes providing a context for creative group interplay and solos that often involve extended tonality. The music is intricate, sometimes delicate, other times high-risk exciting. There are dark, brooding excursions propelled by Middle Eastern vamps as well as more contrapuntally through-composed works.

The Marrow’s border-blurring melodies are delicate yet powerful, connected to the past yet tuned to the future. “Ejdeha” was a critical success hailed by All About Jazz as “a compelling work of contemporary and ancient telepathy.”
