Diana Braithwaite is a descendant of the Wellington County pioneers. With roots in Florida, Diana’s ancestors escaped slavery through the Underground Railroad and lived in Wellington County, the first African-Canadian settlement in Ontario.
A gifted and captivating singer, Diana has performed with legends such as Mel Brown, Albert Collins, John Lee Hooker and Jeff Healey. Diana combines elements from Koko Taylor, Esther Phillips, and others to create her own unique authentic blues and jazz style. Together, Diana and Chris won the Maple Blues Songwriter of the Year Award in 2009. In 2018, Diana was awarded the Blues With A Feeling Lifetime Achievement Award.
Kansas-born multi-instrumentalist Chris Whiteley has been playing, writing and singing the blues for over 30 years. As a teenage performer, he worked with blues legend Lonnie Johnson. During the late 70’s he toured and recorded with Leon Redbone. He also met a great mentor in legendary Chicago piano player Blind John Davis. Whiteley toured and recorded with Davis, while building a solid reputation and career as a session player and as a solo artist. He has won numerous Maple Blues Awards for horn player of the year, and a Jazz Report Magazine Blues Album of the Year Award. In 2010 Whiteley was awarded the prestigious Blues With a Feeling Award for a lifetime of achievement in the blues.
Diana and Chris have a busy touring and recording schedule. Their recent Jazz album “I Was Telling Him About You” (G-Three Records, 2018) won the 2018 Global Music Bronze Award for Best Jazz Female Vocalist. Last fall Diana and Chris released a new Blues album “Gold Cadillac” (G-Three Records, 2019) to rave reviews. This recording made the Jazz FM Top 10 best album of the year (2019) list.
