CROSS-BORDER JAZZ SERIES
Adrean Farrugia – piano
Joel Frahm – saxophone
Adrean Farrugia and Joel Frahm first met in 2009. There was an immediate simpatico between the two musicians – both playful and at times fierce. In August of 2017, Farrugia travelled to New York City where he joined Frahm to record their first album of duets together. The result is a highly expressive music, rich with interplay, groove and emotion. The album features new works by Farrugia as well as ‘deconstructed’ standard vehicles such as Ray Noble’s “Cherokee” and the rarely recorded Jerome Kern masterpiece “Nobody Else but Me”. The album “Adrean Farrugia/Joel Frahm Blued Dharma”’ was released to the public in March of 2018 to wide critical and public acclaim.
“They are both on the same wave length, listening intently to each other’s playing in their exploration of the music and taking it out on interesting limbs… This is clearly intuitive music-making on the highest order… An outstanding album.”
– Lynn Bayley, The Art Music Lounge
“Blued Dharma” proves itself an engaging dance of gorgeous interconnectedness between two virtuosic musicians.”
– Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz
“…a post-bop tenor saxophonist with a deft and assertive command.”
– The New York Times
Joel Frahm began playing the tenor saxophone at a young age. He met pianist Brad Mehldau in high school and the two had weekly gigs locally. His debut recording as a leader was ”Sorry, No Decaf” in 1998. A 2001 recording “Don’t Explain” was a series of duets with Mehldau. A regular on the New York City club circuit, Joel Frahm has appeared alongside musicians such as Bill Charlap and Matt Wilson and has recorded with Diane Schuur, Kurt Elling, Jane Monheit and other top jazz artists. Fans know him for his big tenor sound – fluid, inventive and filled with passion. Downbeat Magazine’s Critics Poll has named him a rising star.
“…Farrugia proves himself to be one of the current scene’s most imaginative pianists.”
– Nic Jones, allaboutjazz.com
