On
January 25, 2018, Canada lost an icon. Tommy Banks was a community
builder, a television personality, and an incredible musician, and
while the Yardbird Suite will always miss Tommy dearly, his musical
legacy will live in forever. On Sunday, April 15, the Yardbird Suite
Jazz Orchestra is honoured to present a musical tribute to the man
himself. The show will feature a handful of Tommy's favourite songs,
alongside a number of his arrangements from his catalogue, including
selections from his Juno Award winning album At The Montreux
Festival (Jazz Canada Montreux 1978). Tommy's early bands, The Banknotes and the Tommy Banks Orchestra, are groups in which a number of influential Edmontonian musicians cut their musical teeth; including Edmontonian jazz veterans Harry Pinchin, Bobby Cairns, Tom Doran, and the late Bob Miller. On Sunday, April 15, the Yardbird Suite would also like to publicly recognize the contribution that these four gentleman made to the Edmonton jazz music scene by formally thanking them and mounting their photos on the venue wall. |
